Radicalized Masculinity in Wilson's work
Interesting article on radicalized masculinity, Troy Maxson, and Fences today over at The Good Men Project. Y’all know I am not a proponent of the new critical race theory, nor do I think August Wilson would have been. But that aside, this article sheds interesting light on an issue that keeps on popping up. Also, think about what the author says about “hands,” and think about Bearden’s collages that inspired Wilson’s plays.

Granted there are legitimate scholars who point to attacks on black masculinity in any form as a general attack on black masculinity. Society may or may not favor expressions of black masculinity. See the much talked about video, Buck Breaking, for an extreme but total exposition on the subject.
